1. Is there a single project, photo or video that thrusted you into the next level?
In September of 2021, my photo series “ReVision” was published in Women’s Wear Daily Magazine. This project will always be very close to my heart. I had worked on it for nine months in college as a final thesis. When it was picked up by WWD, it was such an exciting feature and honor at such a young age.2. What is one trade secret you are willing to share with the public?
It’s always better to shoot more than less, that 30 extra minutes you might have to stay at the end of the day, is worth it every time.3. How do you stay creative? What are things you do to get inspired?
I stay creative by experimenting. When it comes to lighting on set, you will never stop learning it. That to me, means endless possibilities on how to create a certain look or mood for a photograph.4. When and how did you know you wanted to be an artist?
I grew up in an artistic family. My parents worked in the industry when I was young.
I used to go to sets on the weekends or after school and it always intrigued me. When I was 16 I really had to think ‘okay what am I good at and what can I see myself doing for the rest of my life?’ and now I truly don’t work a day in my life and i couldn’t be more grateful.
5. Who are some notable people that you learned from? What did you learn?
I have gotten the opportunity to work with so many amazing people in the photo and film industry. Ab Sesay, Cliff Hausner, Michael Dwornik, Gail Job, Chris Knight, David Mager and so many more amazing people. Each one of these influential people have always found opportunities to create teachable moments while on every set. I think the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is just to ask questions. For me, I learn by doing and sometimes messing up. That’s okay. Once you mess up once you probably won’t make the same mistake again. Take it as a lesson.
6. What are your thoughts about the future of the industry? How do you stay relevant?
I’m excited about the future of the industry, it’s constantly changing and evolving and I hope that continues. I think I stay relevant by experimenting with color, light, and shadow. I have been shooting what makes me happy and it’s proven to be successful!7. What is something that you always have on set? Why?
My multitool. As a photographer and photo assistant, having a grip kit is extremely important but I definitely can’t live without my multitool.8. What is the most under-rated skill in your field? What is the most over-rated?
I would say the most underrated skill is simply communication. I personally think shoots are more successful when there is a good vibe. The crew is working well together and the subject(s) and photographer mesh well. Being on set truly is like a machine and when the machine is well-oiled, it shows. I think the most overrated skill is actually pressing the shutter button. So much goes into the production that the easiest part is pushing that magical button.9. What is something people in your field should try to avoid?
Wearing anything but black on set. This doesn’t always apply but typically you don’t want to wear any bright colors that could reflect onto the set that could change the light or reflect onto the model/subject(s). I honestly have adopted so many black pieces of clothing into my closet that if you were to ask any of my friends or family what my “go to” outfit would be, I think their response would be “anything as long as it’s black.”
